The Minamata disaster in Japan stands as one of the most devastating examples of industrial pollution. For over three decades, a chemical factory discharged mercury into Minamata Bay, contaminating seafood and poisoning thousands. Victims suffered from neurological damage, birth defects, and in many cases, death. The tragedy led to the identification of Minamata disease, a neurological syndrome caused by severe mercury poisoning.
Mercury is highly toxic to humans. It can damage the brain, kidneys, and lungs, and is especially dangerous to developing foetuses. Once released into the environment, mercury persists and bioaccumulates in the food chain—making even small exposures hazardous over time.
In response, the EU has now banned the manufacture, import, and export of mercury-containing products, including mercury-based lamps, as part of its commitment to the Minamata Convention.
At Kemtrak AB, we support this global shift. Our instruments are 100% mercury-free, designed to meet the highest standards of safety and sustainability. We believe in innovation that protects both people and the planet.
