The Platinum-Cobalt (Pt-Co) color scale measures
the “yellowness” of a liquid and is well suited for quality control and contamination detection.
The Pt-Co scale is used to evaluate pollution levels in waste water and for drinking water quality control and regulation. The Pt-Co scale can also be used to measure and control the concentration of iron in groundwater.
This test method is specific to the color yellow and is based on dilutions of a standard platinum cobalt solutions as defined by ASTM designation D1209 "Standard test method for color of clear liquids (Platinum-Cobalt Scale), International Standard ISO 6271-1:2004(E) "Clear liquids - Estimation of color by the platinum cobalt scale" and BS5339:76 (1993) "Measurement of Color on Hazen Units / Platinum-Cobalt".
Additional application areas for the Pt-Co / Hazen / APHA color scale include polymer additives, resin solutions, and solvents such as hexane, glycerol, methanol, mineral oils etc.
