Kemtrak photometers are ideally suited to the needs of the pulp and paper industry. Sodium hydroxide is a key chemical used in the delignification of wood fibres in the kraft pulping process in addition to being used in a number of stages in the bleaching process.

On-line continuous measurement of sodium hydroxide can be made using near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy as sodium hydroxide absorbs selectively at ca 1300 nm. A second wavelength can be used to correct for both turbidity and sensor fouling.

Chlorine dioxide (ClO2) is used primarily as a bleaching agent in the pulp and paper industry for elemental chlorine free (ECF) bleaching. Chlorine dioxide has a strong UV absorption and is accurately and continuously measured in all liquid and gas streams using a Kemtrak DCP007 LED process photmeter.

The Kemtrak DCP007 LED process photmeter is used to optimize the reaction efficiency of ClO2 generation, improve the control of vent-gas scrubbers to reduce emissions into the atmosphere and for monitoring the final concentration of chlorine dioxide product sent to the bleaching plant.

The Kemtrak DCP007 LED process photmeter uses high performance long life LED light technology that provides substantial benefits over traditional incandescent lamps. The optical output from a LED light source is exceptionally stable and consistent over time which eliminates drift and removes the need for recalibration. LED light sources also have a zero maintenance requirement.

Initial calibration is simplified using an automated QuickCal one point calibration. NIST-traceable validation filters are available to verify analyzer performance without process interruption.

Chlorine dioxide is an aggressive chemical substance – all wetted parts of the Kemtrak DCP007 flow cell are manufactured from corrosion resistant materials such as titanium and sapphire.

Chlorine dioxide gas is corrosive and sticky with a high humidity after the gas scrubber. It is essential that the gas is dry prior to measurement and to achieve this we recommend the OmniGas chlorine dioxide gas sampling system that will continuously supply clean dry gas to the measurement cell for trouble free operation.

Ozone is a powerful oxidizing agent used to bleach chemical and mechanical pulp. Ozone is used as an alternative to chlorine or chlorine dioxide to remove lignin from wood pulp . It is often used in conjunction with oxygen and hydrogen peroxide to completely eliminate the need for chlorine-containing compounds in the manufacture of high-quality, white paper.

Ozone strongly absorbs at wavelenghts below 400nm (UV) that the Kemtrak DCP007-UV LED process photomter can easily measure. The Kemtrak DCP007-UV uses a long life high performance UV LED light source with robust industrial grade fiber optics to provide drift and noise-free measurement with very high precision.

A proprietary dual wavelength four channel measurement technique and advanced digital electronics design allows deep absorbance measurement to 5 AU. A range of shorter optical pathlengths allow for deeper absorbance measurements. Automatic compensation for sample turbidity and/or fouling of the optical windows ensures trouble free operation.
